You have basically 3 options:
SB-400 - not that much more powerful than the pop-up
SB-600 - a good overall performer, but you can’t use it as a master for CLS wireless multi-flash (and the pop-up can’t be master either - you need an SB-800 or SU-800 for that)

No ... unless you find you are getting redeye when you use the onboard flash. Only event and news photographers need or use external flash units .. usually the ones designed for the camera they are using. The best is one of the SB series Nikon dedicated flash units.
