If you just want a flash that's much better than your old pop-up flash, you should get the nikon SB-400 flash unit:http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-SB-400-Speed…
it's fairly cheap...
however, if you want a much better unit, which has wireless capabilities, you should check out the nikon SB-800, which is much more of a pricier unit.http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-SB-800-Speed…
you can set up the SB-800 for wireless uses.Depends On Budget

SB-400 - not that much more powerful than the pop-up
SB-600 - a good overall performer, but you can't use it as a master for CLS wireless multi-flash (and the pop-up can't be master either - you need an SB-800 or SU-800 for that)
SB-800 - slightly more powerful than the SB-600 output-wise, able to be a CLS master. You have basically 3 options:

I have found the SB 600 to be the most bang for the buck ...
The Vivitar Thyristor is very old technology .. I used those in the late 1970's ... how old is your friend?
Do you need on? No ... unless you find you are getting redeye when you use the onboard flash. Only event and news photographers need or use external flash units .. usually the ones designed for the camera they are using. The best is one of the SB series Nikon dedicated flash units.
