I know about Nikon’s Capture NX, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a free editor or converter for the RAW files. Thanks

You can use DCRAW to convert your raw images to 16-bit/color TIFF images. Dcraw can convert almost any camera manufacturer’s raw images to TIFF. http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/
DCRAW is a command line program. If you’re not used to command line programs and writing batch files, it may be a bit daunting to use. There are a few cutesy user interfaces for dcraw if you look around. I believe that the D80 outputs 12-bits/color, thus, in 16-bit space your image will look dark. Use your image editor’s level controls to correct this.
When in TIFF mode, you can use 16-bit/color image editors, like Photoshop, to monkey around with your images.

ONLY Nikon’s Capture Software will fully unlock their own RAW instruction set. Adobe Lightshop complements after you convert from RAW.
