“Great but get the body only” 2010-02-01
By Leonardo Ristori
I ended up returning this kit to get the body only and the 50/1.8 and 18-55 VR for about the same total.

I read that the 18-105 does not compare with the 18-55 VR for sharpness and does not justify the cost as part of the kit. This is why I gave it a 4 star.

I am really happy with the camera, I had Canons and really like the Nikon better now.

In my opinion this camera is much easier to use, you can access the most important menu items (so many to list here..) without getting into menus.

The programmable auto iso function is the best thing ever. You set the default iso that the camera uses in normal conditions (e.g. 200) then you set the maximum iso that you want to use to limit noise (e.g. 800) and finally you tell the camera what’s the slowest shutter that you are comfortable with (e.g. 1/125).

Let’s make an example, indoor low light with the 50/1.8 and you don’t want to use the flash. Now if you are in A mode and set for example 1.8, the camera will look at the light with iso 200 and decide how slow of a shutter it needs, if it’s faster than 1/125 it will shoot 1.8-200-1/500 or so.. If 1/125 is too fast it will shoot something like 1.8-400-1/125. Finally if the light is so low what even iso 800 is not enough it will slow down the shutter beyond your comfort zone shooting for example 1.8-800-1/30.

I find this a wonderful feature that I have heard Canons don’t have. I highly recommend setting the custom function button to this auto-iso function because you will be setting this every time you change lens or zoom in and out (your comfort zone changes with focal lengths..)

Video mode is just for fun, make a few short clips, that’s it. Use a HD camcorder for long footage. No autofocus, exposure jumps visibly, and other bugs..

The software is also very nice, transfers and views all image types in a breeze and you can also adjust, copy and export NEF files. Email sharing also very easy.

“Camera lived up to reviews and then some” 2010-01-31
By M. C. Harrison (Lawrenceville, GA, US)
I found many reviews of the Nikon D90 before I purchased it. They said it had the features I wanted without costly extras. They were right! Excellent optics, easy to use, intuitive display, decent instruction booklet. I would highly recommend this product for amateur and semi professional photographers. Excellent quality pictures, not overly heavy, good quality for the money.

“The more i use it, the more I like it.” 2010-01-31
By James R. Lutz (Roswell, GA USA)
The Nikon D90 camera was recommended by a professional photographer. After using it for two months and also using a D40, I am delighted to have its many features. I searched the internet and found several D90s priced less, but was warned to purchase from only a Nikon authorized dealer. The Nikon website lists their authorized dealers. Amazon had the lowest price I found from the authorized dealers, and I haven’t found a lower price since. I had no problems with its shipping nor the camera.

I also recommend the use of Apple’s Light Room software, Nikon Speedlight SB-600, and a light weight Manfrotto tripod. If you are starting a photographic hobby, you will be spending a good amount of money for the “essentials”. Amazon is a good source for many of these.

 “I love my D90″ 2010-01-30
By John W. Crabtree (Knoxville, TN USA)
I’ve had my D90 for three weeks and I love it more each day. The D90 has a fully automatic mode so I was able to take pictures as soon as I got the camera, but its advanced features will take some time to master. The picture quality is outstanding even at higher ISOs. The 18-105 VR lens is sharp and will do for quite some time.

What I don’t like as well: The included software isn’t terrible, but isn’t great either. The video mode is 720p with 24fps max which could easily have been 1080i at 30fps. Still, the video seems clear and smooth on my monitor. I don’t have an HDTV to try it on.

I would classify this as a camera for the serious hobbyist. It is feature-rich and very high quality, but it still has a learning curve.

Overall, I love my D90 and would recommend it without reservation to anyone wanting more than a point and shoot snapshot camera.
