I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens.
I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?

You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn’t that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

If you really want to use a teleconverter, I suggest you look for a 1.5X or 1.6X converter. - I have tried lots of teleconverters and have not been very impressed by any of them, but the lower magnification ones seem to be better. Keep in mind that you will lose two F stops with a 2X converter, which will greatly slow down your autofocus (Auto focus may not work at all) - plus the small maximum opening and the increased magnification, will make it important to use a tripod. Every 2X converter that I have used noticeably reduced sharpness.
If your camera can use non autofocus lenses, consider getting a non-zoom 400mm or 600mm - Check out mirror lenses. I don’t think they produce as good results as a standard lens, but the results should be quite a bit better than your current lens with a teleconverter

Buy a Nikon 2X teleconverter.
You will have to remember that if your lens is a the f3.5/5.6 version (f3.5 @ 18mm, f5.6 @ 200mm) it will behave like an f7/f11.2 lens (f7 @ 36mm, f11.2 @ 400mm). The 2X teleconverter not only doubles the length of the lens (18-200 becomes 36-400) it doubles the f-stop.
If you’d like to see examples of a zoom using a 2X teleconverter go to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/drifter45h/…
My set-up was a Minolta 70-210mm f4 (constant aperture) zoom with a Minolta 2X teleconverter. The butterflies are on Kodak Royal Supra ISO 200 film; the waterlilies are on Fujicolor Superia Reala ISO 100 film. If memory serves I was shooting wide open, i.e., at f4 which behaved like f8 with the teleconverter.

I carry both a 1.4x and a 2x teleconverter. If it is a static subject the 2x is fine. You do sacrifice a bit of sharpness with it. If you are trying to shoot birds in flight or anything else that is moving, the autofocus will give you fits! I use a 70-200 F2.8 VR on a D300 to photograph aircraft in flight. I find the 1.4 teleconverter to be acceptable but it will still “hunt” for the subject sometimes. Sharpness is definitely better with the 1.4 over the 2x. If I remember right the 18-200 is F3.5-5.6? Being not quite as fast a lens as the f2.8 70-200 I think the problem would be slightly exaggerated. Stick with a 1.4!
