I have no interest in doing film anymore, but I have all these good lenses and I want more than a point and shoot. I don’t want to spend alot. Is there a 7meg or better digital Nikon body that I could buy used that would work with my old lenses?

Nikon, Fuji and at least one Kodak digital use the Nikon F lens mount for their DSLRs, so you are not limited to choosing a Nikon. I think Fuji make their own bodies. The Kodak is based on a Nikon film body.
The issue is what generation of lens you have. As mentioned elsewhere, they cannot be used if the are non-AI (pre-1977). The AI and later lenses have the same mount, but they have a aperture sensor tab arrangement that is different. Only some of the high end bodies (F3, F4) made after that were able to use the pre-AI lenses. Certainly not any of the digital bodies as far as I am aware.

Hello,
Nikon and canon both make their digital slr’s to be compatible with most of their regular lenses. There may be one or two of the really old lenses (before autofocus) that won’t work but if your nikon is newer, you should have no problem. I have a canon rebel 2000 and bought a digital rebel a few years ago. All my lenses carried over and work just fine. For a definite answer call the people at B&H photo. They are very knowledgeable and will be glad to help and will be able to reccommend a good camera for you. I use them all the time. They also have a website. 1-800-331-8506 or 1-212-502-6222

If they are Auto focus lens they can be used on all of Nikon Digital cameras, but with the D40 or the D40x the auto focus system will only work with AF-S or AF-I lens you can still manual focus the lens though.
If they are older manual focus lens (modified AI, AI, AIs, or series E) they can also be used on all of Nikon Digital cameras, but the camera meter system will work only with the D200, D2xs, D2Hs. Unlike Cannon Nikon never change their lens mount when they went to auto focus.
Buying a hand held meter is lot cheaper than replacing all of your lens.

If your older lenses are AI or AI-S manual focus, you won’t be able to meter unless you get a D200 or one of the various D1 or D2 series bodies(D1, D1H, D1X, D2H, D2X).
If your lenses are non-AI(anything from before 1978, I believe), they will damage the camera unless the aperture ring is modified to add the AI notches to it.
